Stately Coolart Homestead was commissioned in 1896 by Melbourne businessman Frederick Shepherd Grimwade, who purchased the Coolart Estate in 1895. Designed by Melbourne architectural firm Reed, Smart and Tappin, the Homestead was constructed between 1896 and 1897. It is a stunning example of the Second Empire architectural style, with its distinctive three-storey tower and mansard roof.
To mark this special anniversary, Friends of Coolart have produced Coolart 1896 tea towels, showcasing the Homestead in two styles. One is a traditional watercolour illustration of the Homestead in full colour, and the other a black-and-white sketch in contemporary style. The drawings are the work of Melbourne artist Bec Jacobsen. The aprons feature a white ibis design.
They are available for purchase at the Friends Plant & Gift Shop, open daily at Coolart Wetlands and Homestead.
